Idol’atry Waning?

Amidol.JPGSo, American Idol fans, how is Season 9 going for you?

I confess, though I once watched almost every week and often voted, I’m just finding it hard to care much this year.

Why, you ask? Well, to tell you the truth, I’m not really sure.

It’s not that the show is that much different from previous seasons (with the obvious exception of  Ellen DeGeneres replacing Paula Abdul, of course).

And maybe that’s just the point: It is pretty similar to last year, and the year before, etc. Oh, I know, the singers and personalities and dramatic backstories are new and different this year, as they always are. But for some reason, I feel like I’ve just hit my limit with Idol. I haven’t redialed a single singer’s number even once this year.

Which brings me to a broader question. If you’re a reality TV fan in general, what brings you back to your favorite shows season after season? The same dynamics I’m wrestling with for Idol this season would seem to be true of other reality franchises, as well. Survivor is about surviving (and lying and conniving, of course). The Amazing Race is about, well, amazing races. The Bachelor is about … shedding that title.

So why do you tune in? And if you don’t anymore, why not?
