Boo! Madea Scares Up Another Win

The theaters were filled with top-flight superstars this weekend: multi-Oscar winner Tom Hanks. Ageless action hero Tom Cruise. Ben Affleck—a guy who, um, directs really, really well. But none had the moxie to best Tyler Perry in drag.

For the second straight weekend, Boo! A Madea Halloween took the weekend’s box office crown and daintily placed it on Madea’s ample head. The film earned $16.7 million, according to early estimates, giving it $52 million for its ten-day run.

The victory was an upset for Madea and crew. This was the week that Inferno was supposed to burn up the box office. But even though star Tom Hanks can typically earn $20 million just for sneezing on screen, the thriller quickly abandoned all hope as it entered the box office tourney, beginning its run with an infernal $15 mil. Did Dante create a circle in hell for box office bombs?

Given Madea and Inferno’s one-two punch, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back couldn’t go back to No. 2, where it finished last week. The second installment of the Jack Reacher series slid to third with a $9.6 million weekend, spelling uncertainty for the fledgling franchise. To see a third installment might be a reach.

The Accountant tabulated and aggregated its way to a fourth-place finish, banking another $8.5 million to bring its total grosses to $61.3 million.

The only traditional horror movie to land in the Halloween countdown was Ouija: Origin of Evil. The fright flick’s spooky pointer floated across the board and pointed to $7.1 million—a spirited second-week gross that brings its total tally to $24.6 million. Too bad there’s a distinct lack of retailers in the afterlife.

Final figures update: 1. Boo! A Madea Halloween; $17.2 million; 2. Inferno, $14.9 million; 3. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, $9.6 million; 4. The Accountant, $8.5 million; 5. Ouija: Origin of Evil, $7.1 million.
