Jungle Book Slithers to Another Win

The Huntsman became the hunted at the box office this weekend, which just goes to show the fiercest animal in the entertainment jungle might just be a mouse in yellow shoes.

Disney’s The Jungle Book took home an estimated $60.8 million to win its second-straight weekend box office title. That’s more than three times what runner-up The Huntsman: Winter’s War collected in its debut weekend and raises The Jungle Book’s 10-day domestic tally to a truly elephantine $191.5 million.

Taking into account The Jungle Book’s oversized success, 2016 is shaping up to be a great year for the Mouse House. Its animated movie Zootopia—released way back in February March—is still hanging out in the Top Five, sliding into fourth with another $6.6 million. It’s taken in $316.4 million so far, making it the year’s third highest-grossing film behind Deadpool and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And here’s another little Disney twist for you: While Deadpool technically leads all 2016 movies with $361.1 million, 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens actually earned $395.8 million of its nearly billion-dollar haul in 2016. That makes it, dollar-for-dollar, the highest-grossing movie for both years.

Oh, and we haven’t even talked about the dreadnought-sized pile o’ cash that Disney will likely collect for Captain America: Civil War in a couple of weeks. If the government could somehow talk Mickey Mouse into funneling all his company’s grosses into the national budget, our debt would be down to noth—oh, wait, it’s that high? Never mind.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War looked a little like another intrepid hunter … Elmer Fudd. It bagged just $20.1 million—about 36% of what predecessor Snow White and the Huntsman collected four years ago. It’s only April and it looks like hunting season’s already over.

Barbershop: The Next Cut clipped and snipped another $10.8 million from moviegoers, which pumped its chair into a third-place finish. Meanwhile, Melissa McCarthy’s The Boss suffered a demotion to fifth, earning around $6.1 million.

Final figures update: 1. The Jungle Book, $61.5 million; 2. The Huntsman: Winter’s War, $19.4 million; 3. Barbershop: The Next Cut, $10.5 million; 4. Zootopia, $6.6 million; 5. The Boss, $6.2 million.
