Scorch Trials Chars Black Mass

A balding, gun-wielding Johnny Depp and the low drone of Oscar buzz wasn’t enough to get scads of people to attend Black Mass this weekend. No, the moviegoing public was more interested in another little dose of dystopia.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials produced a controlled burn that included real estate right at the top of the box office. Granted, the numbers weren’t exactly red hot: The second installment of The Maze Runner series earned an estimated $30.3 million—a bit off the $32.5 million the original Maze Runner earned its first weekend. Still, it was enough to singe the competition.

Black Mass, the movie that shows Johnny Depp is more than just extravagant makeup and strange mannerisms, banked $23.4 million, putting the screws to a at least a pair of holdovers to claim second place. M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit decided to drop by third place for a spell—toting $11.4 million in its carry-on luggage. Last week’s champ, The Perfect Guy, took an imperfect tumble all the way down to fourth and $9.6 mil.

It wasn’t very realistic to think that Everest, the third of four major newcomers this weekend, might scale to the very top of the box office. Theaters are the equivalent of good Sherpas, after all, and this mountainous movie was playing in just 545 IMAX theaters. But it still managed to earn $7.6 million, the higher price of admission helping it make nearly twice as much per theater as Scorch and Black Mass did. It finished fifth—knocking War Room out of the Top Five. But mourn not, War Room fans: The Christian movie that could still collected $6.3 million, bringing its total haul to $49.1 mil.

Another Christian movie, Captive, has not as of yet experienced the same sort of success. Despite the presence of top-shelf talent like David Oyelowo and Kate Mara, Captive earned $1.4 million and finished 11th.

Final figures update: 1. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, $30.3 million; 2. Black Mass, $22.6 million; 3. The Visit, $11.6 million; 4. The Perfect Guy, $9.8 million; 5. Everest, $7.2 million.
