Superheroes Beaten Down by Boss?

Superman and Batman are each formidable figures in their own right. Together, they are almost unstoppable. But every once in a while, the two face an adversary so fearsome that it causes even these two caped crimefighters to shake in their form-fitting boots: Doomsday. Eclipso. And now, perhaps, Melissa McCarthy.

According to early estimates, McCarthy’s R-rated comedy The Boss may have just squeezed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for the weekend’s box office title. But let’s stress the word may. If we rounded the estimates up or down, as we typically do in this space, The Boss would look like it would have the lead $23.5 million to $23.4 million. But according to Box Office Mojo, the race is much tighter. The Boss—buoyed still by its new-movie smell—earned an estimated $23,480,000. Batman v Superman—worn down by three weeks of heavy battle in national multiplexes—collected $23,435,000. That’s a difference of just $45,000. Ben Affleck’s probably lost more than that in his couch cushions. We’ll have to wait for the final figures to say, definitively, which movie actually wound up on top.

Disney’s Zootopia, now a little long-in-the-tooth itself, still had enough oomph to clear $14.4 million for third place. During its six-week run, the flick has earned $296 million in North America, making it the third-highest grossing movie of 2016. What does it trail? A pair of superhero movies, of course: Batman v Superman is just a slim batarang ahead of Zootopia with $296.7 million, while Deadpool leads all comers with $358.4 million.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 continues to hold pretty steady, gobbling up another $6.4 million. Newcomer Hardcore Henry, however, proved to be a bit … soft, earning just a mere $5.1 million.

Final figures update: 1. The Boss, $23.6 million; 2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, $23.4 million; 3. Zootopia, $14.3 million; 4. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, $6.5 million; 5. Hardcore Henry, $5.1 million.
