Ultron Foils Hot Pursuit

Reese Witherspoon’s Hot Pursuit tried to chase down the superheroes. The comedy flipped on its lights, cranked the siren and radioed for backup. But let’s face it: There’s only so much you can do when your quarry flies a quinjet.

Avengers: Age of Ultron kept its hulkish grasp on the box office crown this weekend, smashing its way to an estimated $77.2 million. That equates to a 60% slide over its debut last week, but it still easily outdistanced the rest of the box office. (The 41 other movies in theaters made a combined $48.8 million.) Marvel’s all-star superhero extravaganza has already made $312.6 million domestically, and by the time we meet here again next week, it’ll likely be 2015’s highest-grossing flick.

It’s doing mighty nice overseas, too. Throw in its worldwide grosses, and it’s already at $875.3 million, and it has yet to open in Japan or China. Looks like Thor will be able to get that gold plating for Mjolnir after all.

Hot Pursuit, meanwhile, gave itself a $13.3 million ticket and hopes to appear before the box office judges next week to explain itself. Sure, this Witherspoon comedy (also starring Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara) wasn’t expected to challenge our assembled Avengers, but Warner Brothers hoped that the grosses wouldn’t be as tiny as its Oscar-winning star.

Age of Adeline is still looking young, albeit modestly so. In its third week of release, the drama banked another $5.6 million, a slide of less than 10%. it was enough to stave off the still-running Furious 7, which eased to $5.3 million in its sixth weekend. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 rounded out the Top Five with $5.1 million.

Final figures update: 1. Avengers: Age of Ultron, $77.8 million; 2. Hot Pursuit, $13.9 million; 3. The Age of Adeline, $5.8 million; 4. Furious 7, $5.4 million; 5. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, $5.3 million.
