Ant-Man: A Tiny Lesson From a Tiny Superhero

So, the new trailer for Marvel’s newest superhero movie, Ant-Man, has just arrived on YouTube. And with 4 million views and climbing fast at the time of this post, the response has been … well, big.

After watching another Marvel superhero, Daredevil, take a dark turn over on Netflix this week, it’s nice to see Ant-Man take the opposite tack. At least it looks that way from the trailer. Sure, it’ll be exciting. But its makers are clearly gunning for laughs, too—much as they did with their ever-so-awesome poster. (That little dot there? Yeah, that’d be Ant-Man.)

The trailer also has this witty exchange:

“I believe everyone deserves a shot at redemption,” says Michael Douglas.

“Absolutely,” says Paul Rudd. “My days of breaking into places and stealing stuff are over. What do you want me to do?”

“I want you to break into a place and steal some stuff.”

“Makes sense.”

Now, who knows whether this movie will be any good or not, and it’s certainly not possible to draw a well-thought-out conclusion from just a trailer. But since we are Plugged In, which is all about “shining a light on the world of popular entertainment” and all, I’ll leave you with this somewhat strained spiritual point:

When we get our own shot at redemption—as we all have been given—isn’t that sometimes how we treat it? We do the same ol’ thing we did before … only with a spiritual veneer slapped on top? Which makes me pretty curious to know if the movie goes deeper into Ant-Man’s moral rehabilitation, or if it just blows a bunch of stuff up.

OK, so it’s not much of a point. It’s a little one. But, hey, we’re talking about a little superhero, after all. Seemed appropriate.
