Cutting the Cord (and the Hair)

harry potter cast.JPGToday, with the official release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, the blockbuster fantasy franchise is nearing its final curtain call. And boy, it’s been quite a run. In fact, I was recently thinking back on all the flicks based on the J.K. Rowling bestsellers and ended up just a bit surprised when I tallied things up and realized the series will ultimately cover a whopping eight movies. All the wand-waving started way back in 2001, when the kid actor stars were, well, actually kids.

For all three leads—Daniel Radcliff, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint—the last 10 years or so have been pretty much all about moving from one Potter flick to the next. And even though it’s been reported that Miss Watson and Master Grint had never acted in anything but school plays before they got their star-making roles, they’re pretty well known now and everyone is wondering what the 20-year-olds will be up to next..

It’s no secret how Daniel Radcliff decided to break away from the Harry Potter “stigma.” He took a lead role in the live play Equus—a part that required full nudity and on-stage sex scenes.

On the other hand, Emma Watson recently reported that she really doesn’t think she has to step out of her clothes to step away from Hermoine.

“I’m not going to get my kit off or snort cocaine in a film, just to leave Hermione behind,” the actress told London’s Sunday Times magazine. She went on to say that she’s not “so paranoid or insecure” that she has to use something shocking to prove her ability as an actress. Besides, “I don’t want everyone to forget me as Hermione. I’m really proud of her,” she told the magazine.

But Emma did feel it was time to move on in some way. “I just needed to do something that signaled, ‘OK, you’re entering a new phase,” she told USA Today. So what was that new-phase-turn-the-page-break-the-mold choice?

She got a haircut.

The young actress said her transition from Hermione’s well-known bushy locks to a  Twiggy-like pixie hairstyle was a “liberating” change. And I’d say her choice and her attitude are, well, pretty refreshing. Good for you, Emma.
