Dancing Around a Problem

I recently heard a radio report from Fox News of a Christian women’s fitness class they’re starting up in Houston called Pole Dancing for Jesus.

I couldn’t help but groan—and not the silent type that you think but keep inside, either. This was an out-loud grumble that usually escapes after eating a too spicy lunch and before swallowing an antacid. Now, I know we’re just talking about one fitness class in one part of the country here. And I’m well aware that this isn’t the first usage of poles when it comes to fitness.

But when I heard the report, I had to wonder if it wasn’t some sort of spoof.

Besides the fact that “Pole Dancing for Jesus” sounds like a snarky Saturday Night Live sketch, doesn’t common sense tell us that this is probably a bad idea? Doesn’t this sort of thing open Christians up for even more criticism from the rest of the world—one that’s already watching the Church’s choices with a cynical eye? Case in point: The Fox News reporter couldn’t help but wonder where all the church ladies might be holding their tithes while they did their dancing.
