Elvis has Left the Billboard

glee.JPGMove over, Elvis. Looks like there’s a new king in town.

I’m talking, of course, about Fox’s hit show Glee—and the fact that as of this week, it has spawned more Hot 100 singles than any artist in the chart’s 52-year history.

Before this week, the King still wore the crown. In his career, Elvis Presley managed to chart 108 songs on the Hot 100. In a mere 18 months, however, Glee has propelled 113 songs onto Billboard’s flagship singles chart, thus technically bumping Elvis from the top spot as far as the record books are concerned.

Then again, the producers of Glee have 60-plus years of rock and pop history to mine when it comes the songs they’re choosing to cover on the enormously popular show. So even though Glee is officially tops in the record book, it’s arguably an unfair, apples-to-oranges affair to compare its ensemble cast’s new chart record to that of individual artists or bands.
