Furious Is Fast in Its Second Lap

Sure, maybe it slowed a little in its second week. But there’s still no stopping Furious 7.

Vin Diesel’s supercharged action flick lost nearly 60% of its audience, but it still outpaced its nearest competitor by a factor of three and roared through the weekend’s checkered flag with an estimated $60.6 million.

In just two weekends of work, Furious 7 has earned $252.5 million Stateside, which cements it as the  highest grossing film in the Fast & Furious franchise (and the most lucrative movie of the year, too). And if that wasn’t enough, this Diesel-powered monster also set an opening day record in China (according to Box Office Mojo), banking $68.6 million and pushing its worldwide gross to around $800 mil.

Home finished a distant second, stuffing about $19 million under its DreamWorks mattress. It wasn’t even enough to keep it within shouting distance of Furious 7, but don’t feel too bad for this little animated ditty. Home has still earned $129.6 million thus far, which is better than some of DreamWorks’ recent animated outings. Now, that’s something to write home about. (Or, at least, something to write about Home.)

The weekend’s only major newcomer, The Longest Ride, slogged to a $13.5 million, third-place weekend. I suspect this Nicholas Sparks bull-riding romance might’ve done better with more explosions. Or cars. Or exploding cars. (In fairness, one car did catch fire.)

Get Hard banked $8.6 million of cold, hard cash to finish fourth, leaving Cinderella waltzing by her lonesome in fifth. Disney’s fair princess, who earned $7.2 million this weekend, will likely be climbing in her pumpkin coach soon, riding out of the Top Five with somewhere north of $180 million. Not too shabby for a scullery maid who talks with mice.

Final figures update: 1. Furious 7, $59.6 million; 2. Home, $18.5 million; 3. The Longest Ride, $13 million; 4. Get Hard, $8.2 million; 5. Cinderella, $7.1 million.
