Great Scott! Batman v. Superman Bashes Records at Box Office

Despite critics lobbing kryptonite at Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight did just fine for themselves. Indeed, you could make the argument that their performance was … super.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice flew to the top of the box office with a truly stupendous $170.1 million. That’s the best March opening in cinematic history (bolting past the $152.5 million set by The Hunger Games in 2012). And if the studio’s estimates hold up, it will set a new debut record for Warner Bros., too—leaping over the tall building that was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (which made $169.1 million in its opening weekend). Oh, and if that wasn’t impressive enough, it was more powerful than a locomotive worldwide, as well, collecting $424.1 million across the globe.

It’s staggering to think about how much moola this flick would’ve made had it actually been, y’know, good.

That said, Batman v. Superman has some work to do to break even, given its estimated $250 million budget and obscene marketing costs. USA Today says that the superhero movie might need to make as much as $800 million globally to break even. Now, that’s a number that might make even Bruce Wayne flinch.

After three straight weeks at No. 1, Disney’s Zootopia slouched into second place, collecting a still-impressive $23.1 million. The animated flick is now the year’s second highest-grossing movie with $240.5 million—a couple of time zones away from catching Deadpool and its $349.5 million, but still, not exactly rabbit feed.

While My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 didn’t boast superhero-like numbers in its debut, it did just fine for itself, earning a big, fat $18.1 million on its way to a third-place finish.

Fourth place is, as of now, simply too close to call. The faith-based flick Miracles From Heaven was locked in a battle royale with The Divergent Series: Allegiant, both with a predicted take of $9.5 million.

Final figures update: 1. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, $166 million; 2. Zootopia, $24 million; 3. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, $17.9 million; 4. Miracles From Heaven, $9.7 million; 5. The Divergent Series: Allegiant, $9.4 million.
