Happily Married and Happier for It

I’ve been married for 20 years now, and I can say the last two decades have been the best and happiest of my life.

I’m not just writing that because my lovely bride will surely read this at some point, either. Heidi collaborates with me, completes me, complements me and even compliments me from time to time! She is truly the love of my life, an angel in disguise, a soul mate and all those other sappy things we’ve come to believe in by way of our romance-riddled popular culture.

It’s a popular culture that’s supplied us with awesome “ahhhs” like “As you wish” (from Princess Bride), “You’ll shoot the moon/Put out the sun/When you love someone” (Bryan Adams), “Only the two of us together flying high upon the wings of love” (Jeffrey Osborne), “All you need is love” (The Beatles), “Who, being loved, is poor?” (Oscar Wilde), “I love you. You annoy me more than I ever thought possible, but … I want to spend every irritating minute with you” (Scrubs), “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible” (When Harry Met Sally), “Now join your hands, and with your hands your hearts” (Shakespeare).

But it’s also a popular culture that has less and less good to say about that grand consummation of love and affection that God gave us. That thing called marriage.

So it’s heartening to hear two of our current celebrities who had become poster people for cohabitation finally talk about the grandness of finally tying the knot. Says Angelina Jolie, “It does feel different. It feels nice to be husband and wife.” And her new hubby Brad Pitt confirms, “There’s an added security that comes with [being married].”

You bet there is. Security. Sanctuary. Stability. Yes, and sexiness too. Thanks, Brangelina, for saying so. And thanks, Heidi, for making it so for me.
