Jurassic World Turns Inside Out Upside Down

The day of the dinosaurs has lasted for another epoch. Or, at least, one more weekend.

Despite facing a new warm-blooded challenger in Inside Out, Jurassic World roared to another victory, ripping and tearing its way to a truly monstrous $102 million (estimated, of course), bringing its North American total gross to $398.2 million. If you throw in all the money it’s earned overseas, Jurassic World could potentially hit $1 billion before the day is out.

But while the dinosaur still reigns, Inside Out had a pretty nice run, too.

Pixar’s ambitious animated movie earned $91.1 million. While Inside Out fell short of the $100 million mark, The sunny emotion Joy is still in control of the Mouse House’s collective business brain. Box Office Mojo says Inside Out scored the highest opening ever for a completely original movie, zipping past James Cameron’s Avatar for the honors. (And, as you may know, Avatar has done pretty well for itself.)

While those two behemoths battled for supremacy, pitting tooth and claw against, um, happy marble memories, the rest of the pack scuttled for safety in the underbrush. Spy finished third with $10.5 million, while San Andreas shook out another $8.2 million from moviegoers for fourth. Dope, the weekend’s only other wide-release newcomer, was smoked by the rest of the competition and finished with a rather dispiriting $6 million, placing it just inside the Top Five.
