Movie Monday: Date Night

date night.JPGA couple of comedians trounced an army of gods and monsters to triumph at the box office this weekend. Date Night, starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey, made $27.1 million to nudge past rapidly falling Clash of the Titans ($26.9 million). How to Train Your Dragon—the film I took my own family to this weekend—finished third with (in exact figures, here) $25,350,000. To think, if I hadn’t have gone, DreamWorks would’ve had to settle for $25,349,980.

From what I hear from reviewer Adam Holz, Date Night was a promising film gone horribly, horribly wrong. Adam—the father of two little tykes himself and, thus, no stranger to at least the concept of date nights—says there were parts of the film that felt absolutely, almost painfully true to life … but in the end the film was just too obnoxiously objectionable to enjoy.

And that’s a bit of a bummer for me. I think Carell and Fey are two of the funniest folks around, and I might’ve been tempted to build my own date night around the film. Now, though, I’ll probably skip Date Night altogether … which means another fabulous evening with my wife eating pizza rolls and watching Mythbusters.

What do you moviegoers think? Am I making the right decision?
