Movie Monday: Ouija

‘Tis the season for horror movies, what with Halloween coming up and all. So not too surprising we saw such a spirited display for Ouija this weekend. The horror movie predicated on a supernatural board game earned an estimated $20 million this week to haunt the tip-top of the box office.

Fellow newcomer John Wick didn’t have a ghost of a chance. Still, Wick lit up the box office charts with $14.2 million of its own—enough, perhaps, to tease the smallest of smiles from star Keanu Reeves. (Or not.)

Last week’s champ, Fury, was downgraded to simply Anger this weekend, collecting $13 million for third place. Next week, we expect the Brad Pitt vehicle to slip down to Irk.

Meanwhile, Gone Girl still hasn’t left the Top Five. It’s fourth this weekend with $11.1 million, bringing its total haul to $124.1 mil. It was enough to slip past The Book of Life, which rounded out the Top Five with $9.8 million.

And since we’ll likely never be able to talk about Bill Murray’s latest movie otherwise in this space, St. Vincent (which had been trundling along in small-release indie territory for the last couple of weeks) rolled wide and earned $8.1 million for sixth.

Final figures update: 1. Ouija, $19.9 million; 2. John Wick, $14.4 million; 3. Fury, $13.4 million; 4. Gone Girl, $11 million; 5. The Book of Life, $10 million; 6. St. Vincent, $7.7 million.
