Movie Monday: Saw 3D

saw 3d.JPGSince its inception way back in 2004, the Saw franchise has sliced and diced its way to nearly $400 million in domestic box office receipts. But lately, the films’ performances have been, how shall we say, dull?

Granted, Saw 3D’s opening take this weekend wasn’t exactly toothless, collecting $22.5 million to win the weekend tally. It was a big improvement over the $14.1 million the series’ previous incarnation, Saw VI, posted its opening weekend. But considering the franchise’s other sequels grossed an average of $10 million more than Saw 3D, there’s a possibility that the Lionsgate folks may be telling us the truth when they say this is the last Saw movie … for a while, at least. Turns out, it was an indifferent public that may finally bring Jigsaw’s reign of terror to an end.

Another horror sequel, Paranormal Activity 2, rattled into second place with $16.5 million, while the geriatric thriller RED popped into third place with $10.8 million. The low-concept Jacka– 3D and high concept Hereafter landed in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

I can’t say I’m sad to see Saw supposedly split. Are you?
