Movie Monday: Unknown

The box office was a misty, mysterious place to be this weekend, with four movies packed tightly together at the top of the standings, looking like a handful of cinematic sardines. And since we still have a Presidents’ Day worth of box office receipts to tabulate, the entertainment industry’s cash counters aren’t yet willing to set weekend standings in stone.

It’s pretty appropriate, then, that a film called Unknown leads the pack going into Presidents’ Day: The Liam Neeson vehicle has earned an estimated $21.8 million thus far, mimicking the success of his low-budget 2009 thriller Taken.

I Am Number Four settles in at a tentative No. 2 with $19.5 million, thus disappointing the folks at DreamWorks who had hoped to have the next Twilight franchise on their hands. And, because the animated Gnomeo and Juliet was just $100,000 behind the teen alien heartthrob flick, and Just Go With It (which earned $18.2 million) might surprise everyone with a surge of Presidents’ Day daters, there’s an ever-so-slight possibility that Number Four just might be No. 4 come Tuesday morning.

In truth, I wouldn’t have seen any of these films if my editor hadn’t forced me to. Did anything strike your fancy this week?
