Movie Tuesday: A Little Gritty

little grit.JPGWe’re back in the office after a day off, and it looks like the new year’s starting off much as 2010 ended, at least as far as movies are concerned. Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro’s rather foul comedy, Little Fockers, was technically the repeat winner at the box office this weekend, according to the estimates from boxofficemojo.com, followed by The Coen Brothers’ True Grit. But the competition narrowed this week, with Little earning just $26.3 million to Grit’s $24.5 million, which was almost as much as the Western made its first week out of the stable.

The last weekend of 2010/first of 2011 proved to be pretty family friendly, too. TRON: Legacy swooped into third place with $18.3 million, Yogi Bear ate its way to fourth with $13 mil, and Narnia’s sturdy little boat, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, sailed into fifth with $10.5 million (about 10% more than it earned the week before, incidentally). Oh, and Tangled bounced back into higher reaches of the box office tally, raising its own weekend gate by a whopping 55% and finishing sixth with $10.1 million.
