There’s a lot of interest buzzing around about the new, powerful video game consoles coming out this fall from both PlayStation (PS5) and Xbox (Series X). These consoles are supposed to have better speed, better graphics, better everything. And to help boost that excitement (at least for its own PS5), Sony has even gone so far as to put together a documentary—releasing September 7—that lauds the history of their PlayStation wonder.
If nothing else, the trailer for From Bedrooms to Billions: The PlayStation Revolution certainly gives us a sense of how incredibly far video games have come in the last 25 years. And when the doc does release, it could well give non-gaming parents a sense of what’s out there and what to expect. We already gave you a bit of a teaser ourselves back in May when we let you know about the Unreal Engine 5. As I wrote then:
If you’re a parent of a gamer, we don’t need to tell you how realistic games look now. This engine takes that realism to a new level. More realistic environments make for a more realistic, more immersive world … and the game’s content issues become more problematic, too.
Even if you’re not into video games, you ought to be prepared. Because odds are, your game-loving tyke is going to start inundating you soon with all the completely logical reasons why a brand-new, hyper-powered gaming console is exactly the thing your family needs.
Just think of all the money you can save, Mom, on things like books and clothing and … food. Just toss a PS5 into Junior’s bedroom, along with a few bags of chips, and lock the door behind you. (That’s sarcasm, just in case you didn’t catch it.)
