Zootopia’s a Beast at Box Office

All good things come to an end. All bad things too, for that matter. However you classify Deadpool, its red reign at the top of the box office has come to a close.

Marvel’s wise-cracking antihero was no match for Disney’s Zootopia, a money-making marvel of its own. Indeed, the animated romp was boffo at the box office, squirreling away an estimated $73.3 million. Granted, that’s not quite on the pace Deadpool set a month ago, but it’s the biggest opening for Walt Disney Animation Studios ever—including a certain 2013 blockbuster featuring a pair of strong sisters and a talking snowman. Let it go, people.

Oh, and given that Zootopia has earned rave reviews from most critics (we liked it, too, with a few caveats), it looks like the movie may leave the upper echelons of the box office like a bunch of government-employed sloths: verrrry slowwwly.

Another newcomer, London Has Fallen, finished a distant second to Zootopia, blasting its way to a $21.7 million weekend. It also gives star Gerard Butler the distinction of having two movies in the Top Five: His unintentional CGI laugher Gods of Egypt flapped into fifth place this week with $5 million—just enough to buy a few more canisters of wing polisher.

Deadpool, the box office champ for three straight weeks, tumbled all the way to third with $16.4 million. But while the notoriously durable superhero may be weakening a bit, his movie has already banked $311.2 million—making it the year’s biggest movie by far (Kung Fu Panda 3 is in second with $133.8 mil). It’s also among the top dozen superhero movies ever—trailing just flicks featuring the Avengers (two movies), Batman (two movies) Iron Man (three movies), Spider Man (three movies) and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Tina Fey’s dramedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot became the third new movie to hit the Top Five, sliding into fourth place with $7.6 million.

Final figures update: 1. Zootopia, $75.1 million; 2. London Has Fallen, $21.6 million; 3. Deadpool, $16.7 million; 4. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, $7.4 million; 5. Gods of Egypt, $5.2 million.
